Travel Guide: Positano

Travel Guide: Positano

In case you don’t read this entire post, there’s one thing you should know… Positano is an absolute dream and if you can travel there, you should! I already knew I’d love it from all of the Pinterest photos and Instagram posts that I’ve saved over the years, but I never could have prepared for just how much I’d fall in love with this magical place.

Travel

To get to Amalfi, we traveled by train and ferry. We started on an early train from Rome to Salerno and gave ourselves a few hours there to grab lunch and some drinks. We walked around Salerno a bit with luggage in tow, then stopped at a cafe right across the street from the docks to share a bottle of Prosecco and people watch until it was time to catch the ferry.

The boat ride from Salerno to Positano was one that I’ll never forget. The real life colors of the water and cliffside villages of Amalfi don’t even begin to compare with the photos I’d seen online (or have posted below). After about 45 minutes of stunning views, we arrived in Positano and were immediately greeted by our hotel. Our attendant took care of everything, loaded our luggage on to his cart, and proceeded to guide us along the beautiful, winding pathway to our hotel.

Hotel

Based on recommendations from Sivan Ayla’s blog, I booked our stay in Positano at Hotel Pupetto and would HIGHLY recommend you do the same. The hotel staff here was incredible, and helped us make several plans as we didn’t book any activities in advance — everything from dinner reservations to private boat rentals. This hotel location is also perfect as they have their own private beach (separate from the super-popular main beach and are only a short (and gorgeous) walk away from the main part of town.

Things To Do

Arienzo Beach Club - Many of the beaches in the area are only accessible by water. Make a reservation for lunch or dinner at the restaurant and you can catch a boat ride over from the main dock in Positano. Wear sandals or prepare to take your shoes off as you’ll jump off the boat onto a skinny dock or even straight onto the beach. Once you’re there, head straight for a beach chair and enjoy a day in the sun.

Rent a Boat - Our hotel was a tremendous help in booking a private boat for one of the days we were there. You can choose to drive yourself, but I’d recommend booking with a captain. Ours treated us to a nice bottle of champagne (and we brought wine of our own of course), and he also knew some awesome caves and spots to stop that we likely would have missed on our own!

Shop the streets of Positano - There are tons of local shops to stop in as you walk around town, carrying everything from gorgeous painted tiles to beautiful linens and of course, limoncello. Looking back, I wish I brought (or bought) another luggage to take more back home with us.

Take the bus to Praiano - For a bit of an adventure, take the wild bus ride over to Praiano and experience the narrow, winding roads of Amalfi (tall cliffsides included)!

Places To Eat

Chez Black - This restaurant is wildly popular and you basically can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. Make sure to book reservations as soon as you can!

Arienzo Beach Club - While you can enjoy the beach club without a reservation, I strongly suggest making one because 1) the food is amazing (obsessed with their lemon ravioli!) and 2) you’ll want something to eat if you’re planning to drink in the sun all day.
