Travel Guide: A weekend trip to San Diego

Travel Guide: A weekend trip to San Diego

Back in December, Chris was helping launch a new shop in downtown San Diego so we decided to make a weekend trip out of it. Given how much fun we had, I’m sure we’ll be back to explore more again soon. In case you’re in need of a weekend adventure (or last minute Valentine’s plans), read on to see what we did during our visit to SD.

Where to Stay

We stayed downtown at the Kimpton Palomar and enjoyed being close to both Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter. The Kimpton gives you a drink credit per day which we used to grab margaritas at their downstairs cantina, Curadero, before heading out both nights. If it were a bit warmer during our trip, we would have taken full advantage of their rooftop pool and bar too.

I wasn’t kidding when I said I’m already planning another trip back down. I looked into a few other hotels in the downtown/Gaslamp area and am thinking we’ll stay at one of these next time: Pendry San Diego, The Guild Hotel, or Hotel Republic. The Pearl, closer to Point Loma and Pacific Beach, looks like a cute spot too!

Where to Eat

As far as food goes, we found plenty of spots that did not disappoint:

  • Herb and Wood - A swanky restaurant with awesome drinks and an even better dessert menu. In case you missed it on my IG stories, I shared the video of our dessert and you can find it in my SD highlights (their presentation was incredible and the flavors were beyond!!).

  • Cafe 21 - Hands down, the BEST BREAKFAST I’ve had in ages. I loved every single thing about this place. From the Moroccan inspired decor to their insanely delicious plates, I’m already dreaming about our next trip to San Diego just so I can go back to eat here again.

  • Filippi’s and their market - A classic Italian market with the best lasagna (and bolognese sauce) in town. They have several locations (so you know its good), but I’d recommend going to their iconic Little Italy spot.

What to Do

On Saturday, we took advantage of the Kimpton’s rental bikes and rode down to the convention center to catch the ferry to Coronado. We had a blast biking down to Hotel del Coronado and stopped for margaritas at their Beach Shack on the beach.

On Sunday, we drove through Balboa Park to get to the North Park neighborhood and I wish we had more time to spend here. There were tons of restaurants and fun shops, including Pigment, where we picked up some last minute gifts for family and friends. We hung out in Point Loma for a bit and walked along Sunset Cliffs, one of the prettiest spots in San Diego.

I loved our weekend trip so much I’m starting to think I need to expand our house hunt to further south in San Diego county (or at least plan another getaway soon)! Have you been to San Diego? Let me know your favorite things to do/places to go below!
